FIRE PROTECTION FOR THE OFFSHORE INDUSTRY

The platforms and rigs in service with the offshore industry present almost every variety of fire hazard concentrated in a very small area. The overall strategy for protection of these complex island structures, located anything up to 500 kilometers from shore, is based on extensive use of sea water. In addition, installations incorporating halon gas and carbon dioxide as extinguishing agents are used in specific application in such areas as generator turbine, switchgear and battery rooms. Automatic detection and sprinkler systems are among the devices discussed.
