PRELIMINARY STRUCTURAL DESIGN BY ASSIMILATING THE MATERIALS USED IN THE STRUCTURES TO A RIGID-PLASTIC SOLID

LE PREDIMENSIONNEMENT DES STRUCTURES PAR ASSIMILATION DU MATERIAU A UN SOLIDE RIGIDE-PLASTIQUE

Details are given of a method for the preliminary design of metal frames consisting of bars. The method is based on the plastic theory concept. The problem is expressed in the form of an equation derived by applying the static theorem, and using simple plasticity criteria. The solution is obtained by means of linear programming techniques in the form of continuous or mixed variables. Particular mention is made of a possible way of taking account of the discontinuity in the succession of structural shapes available, and of the influence of the normal force on the moment when the bars become plastic. A simple example is given of a plane statically indeterminate structure subjected to load. /TRRL/
