PLANS TO FILL LONG SLIP CANAL OFFER TRANSIT AND SEDIMENT SOLUTIONS

For decades, the unused Long Slip Canal has split the Hoboken Rail Terminal into two detached sections, preventing New Jersey Transit from expanding this busy intermodal mass transit transfer station to its full potential. Today, New Jersey Transit is pursuing an innovative solution that would allow rail yard expansion of 8.4 ac (3.4 ha) by filling the canal with sediment or other fill material and using the reclaimed area for expanded transit activity. Filling the canal will also improve water quality by isolating contaminated and oxygen-demanding canal sediments. Yet, filling in tidal waters, no matter how degraded, requires mitigation. To mitigate the impacts of filling the canal, a comprehensive mitigation plan has been developed. The plan features several water quality improvements that will create fish habitat where none could otherwise exist.
