PROPERTIES OF CFRP COMPOSITES FOR CONCRETE STRUCTURES

It has been believed that concrete structures are durable and permanent. However, recently it is revealed that the durability of concrete structue is not always excellent because of the corrosion of steel reinforcement. Under such circumstances, noncorrosive reinforcement is required in order to avoid corrosion problems. Carbon Fiber (CF) has superior properties such as light weight, high strength and durability and is considered to be suitable for concrete reinforcement. The authors have developed two types of composites using continuous CF. One is LEADLINE, CFRP (CF reinforced plastics) rods (called CF rod hereafter). The other is REPLARK, CF-UC (CF uni directional) prepeg (called CF sheet heareafter). CF rod is used as tendons instead of prestressed concrete (PC) strands, and as reinforcement instead of steel re-bars, respectively. CF sheet is used as a reinforcing sheet bonded to concrete surfaces to strengthen existing concrete structures.
