ON THE ICE RESISTANCE ENCOUNTERED BY SHIPS OPERATING IN THE CONTINUOUS MODE OF ICEBREAKING
Predictions of ice resistance obtained from models of three ships breaking uniform ice in the continuous mode are compared with full-scale data. Some original data on natural and model ice strength and friction are given and the scale effect of saline model ice due to low strain modulus discussed. Dimensionless terms for breaking, submersion and velocity components of resistance are regression analysed. Causal analysis revealed velocity resistance to result from turning floes against mass and gravity forces. Form coefficients include friction, which is shown to influence resistance considerably. This experimental investigation of fundamentals does not treat practical design.
