THE WAY TO LONGER LASTING WHEELS AND RAIL
Over 1.4 million freight cars and nearly 25,000 locomotives are owned by North American railroads, car owners, and shippers; that adds up to over 10 million steel wheels. Class I railroads own enough track to equate to over 40 million tons of steel. Together, wheels and rail are a huge investment, and considerable savings can be gained from maximizing their life. Transportation Technology Center, Inc. (TTCI) engineers are examining ways to develop improved rail steels and rail grinding practices. Additionally, improved lubrication as well as improved suspension trucks are considered for reduction of wear and tear on wheels and rail.
