SCATS, SYDNEY CO-ORDINATED ADAPTIVE TRAFFIC SYSTEM : A TRAFFIC RESPONSIVE METHOD OF CONTROLLING URBAN TRAFFIC

This publications is a detailed description of the SCATS computer based traffic signal control system which is being implemented in the Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, metropolitan area. The system will ultimately control over 1,800 signals including 150 in the central business district. A central computer monitors the operation of 20 regional computers which, in turn, advise local controllers. SCATS automatically adapts itself to changing traffic flow and features a traffic control center in downtown Sydney with 64 television screens.
