(EQUIPMENT AND METHODS SPECIFIC TO SOIL TREATMENT WORKS)

MATERIELS ET TECHNIQUES D'EXECUTION SPECIFIQUES AUX TRAVAUX DE TRAITMENT DES SOLS

This report presents the equipment and methods used for applying soil treatment to the construction of embankments, capping layers, and pavement bases. Soil treatment for embankment construction aims to allow the re-use of soils that are too wet to be handled by ordinary earthmoving equipment in acceptable ways. The most suitable treatment material to add is nearly always quicklime, in a proportion less than 2%. The equipment needed is required for quicklime storage, spreading, mixing, and compaction. Several mixing methods are described, and mixing may be on the embankment or away from it. There are several methods of soil treatment for the construction of capping layers and pavement bases. Stabilisation with lime and/or hydraulic binders seems attractive at first sight, but is usually complex. Competing stabilisation products include: cement, lime and cement, and pozzolanic binders. Dry clayey soils can be treated with lime wash in regions with a dry climate. Details are given of the required general site organisation, and of specific aspects including: soil preparation, spreading, mixing, plant production, compaction, sprinkling, shaping, embedding chippings, and surface protection. Details are given of how to ensure that soil treatment equipment and methods protect the environment.
