EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSIS ON SBS-L MODIFIED BITUMEN

In the article, researchers present the results obtained during a trial on modified bitumen carried out at the Institute of Road Infrastructures and Geotechnics of the University of Bologna. Starting from three ordinary 80/100 bitumen and an elasto-plastomer (SBS-L), numerous mixes were prepared with growing degrees of modification. This allowed researchers to set a correlation between dynamic viscosity and the temperature, as well as some remarks on the response of mixes to modification. The research was set up into three following stages: (a) analysis of basic bitumen and their rheologic characterisation; determination of dynamic viscosity at temperatures to 80, 135, 160 and 180 degrees C; (b) mixing of bitumen with SBS-L in weight proportion of 3, 4, 5 and 6% and rheologic characterisation of mixes; determination of dynamic viscosity at temperatures of 80, 135, 160 and 180 degrees C; and (c) analysis of results and definition of an exponential-type correlation between dynamic viscosity and temperature. The proposed correlation allows researchers to evaluate the influence of thermal variations during testing of flexible road surface. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 885061.
