MODEL DEPLOYMENT TO OFFER SEAMLESS TRAVEL

An intermodal transportation management system and integrated real-time highway and transit information services for the Seattle metropolitan area is being developed. One of the Seattle area model deployment initiative's (MDI) goals is to reduce travel time by 15%. This project spans three Puget Sound area counties and several municipalities served by three transit agencies. Fifty components that make up the project can be grouped into four categories, which are transportation management systems including traffic signal control and freeway management; transit management and electronic commerce including electronic fare payment and toll collection; emergency services and incident management and traveler information services. When completed in late 1997, Seattle will offer an opportunity for decision makers from around the country to learn about intelligent transportation infrastructure (ITI) and "kick the tires" of operating systems.
