STUDY ON THE CAVITATION OF THE HYDROFOIL FOR THE TECHNO-SUPERLINER- F

The cavitation performance of the hydrofoil for the Japanese Techno-Superliner was investigated using 1/50 hydrofoil models and a 1/6 scale seagoing test ship. The 1/50 hydrofoil models were tested in a cavitation tunnel to estimate the full scale performance. Fluid dynamic forces were measured and the inception and growth of cavitation were observed. The area of cavitation free operation and the influence of cavitation growth on the fluid dynamic forces were clarified. The scale effect on the cavitation performance was also investigated under the range of Reynolds number 9.4x105 to 2.4x106. In order to evaluate the model test results and to investigate the scale effect, a 1/6 scale seagoing test ship was built and tested. The inception and growth of cavitation on the hydrofoil of the ship were observed at Reynolds number 3.1x107 by small TV cameras installed in her struts.
