SMART SALTING: A WINTER MAINTENANCE STRATEGY 1995
Smart Salting was tested for use by the Vermont Agency of Transportation during the winter of 1993-1994 as part of their snow and ice control plan. Essentially, Smart Salting is a combination anti-icing/deicing strategy where the winter maintenance crews (1) measure pavement temperatures before and during a storm by infrared sensors mounted on supervisor vehicles and (2) determine salt application rates based upon the relationship between pavement temperature, the melting capacity of salt and the estimated thickness of ice/snow on the pavement. The test was conducted in central Vermont and resulted in less salt use and safer winter road conditions when compared to previous experience. This report describes the Smart Salting project.
