BOSTON ON SCHEDULE
This article describes the planning and execution of the 10-lane underground expressway - the Central Artery/Tunnel (CA/T) in Boston. A number of innovative construction techniques are being used in this project. The CA/T will have the first asymmetrical and widest cable-stayed bridge in the world, the largest and deepest circular cofferdam in North America, the first ever use of concrete immersed tubes in the U.S., the largest use of slurry wall construction in one location in North America, the most extensive geotechnical investigation and testing program in North America and the largest tunnel ventilation system in the world.
