SHRP RESEARCH AND THE AFFECT [SIC] ON THE ASPHALT PAVING INDUSTRY IN THE UNITED STATES
The Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) has developed a new mix design procedure for Hot Mix Asphalt. This new procedure is referred to as Superpave. Many State DOT's in the United States have begun to adopt the new procedure and most states will certainly adopt it by the year 2000. The introduction of these new procedures have lead to the development of additional pieces of testing equipment and changes in asphalt plant and placement equipment. This paper discusses the variety of new pieces of laboratory equipment developed, the changes in mixing plants, and the changes in lay down and compaction procedures.
