This paper is based on the results of the pan-European driver attitude survey conducted by SARTRE (Social Attitudes to Road Traffic Risk in Europe) which included several questions related to drinking and driving. Results from the second survey, SARTRE II, are presented and areas related to alcohol and driving are discussed. These include a) drinking behaviour in the participating country, b) opinions about alcohol risk when driving, c) opinions about alcohol legislation, d) self-reported drinking and driving habits, e) opinions about enforcement and f) links between individual drinking habits, attitudes towards alcohol and driving and reported behaviour by country.
