LABORATORY AND FIELD TESTS ON AN UNSATURATED EXPANSIVE CLAY
Laboratory and field tests were performed on an unsaturated expansive clay in the Metropolitan Region of Recife, Brazil. The experimental research carried out involved soil characterization, influence of climatic factors, instrumentation measurements and soil suction. Seasonal ground movements observations obtained over a period of four years are presented, together with water content and soil suction determinations. Laboratory and field tests including in situ shrink/swell measurements under well-controlled conditions are essential to understand the behavior of unsaturated expansive clays. The soil suction parameter allows a best ability to represent the field conditions. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 881647.
