A SIMPLIFIED ULTIMATE STRENGTH ANALYSIS METHOD FOR CORRUGATED BULKHEADS

In this paper a simplified and practical procedure is proposed to numerically estimate the ultimate capacity of corrugated bulkheads subjected to combined lateral hydrostatic pressure and axial loadings. The first phase of the development of the analysis method is to compute the moment-curvature relations of beam-column sections using the tangent stiffness method considering hydrostatic pressure and axial loading. In the second phase the ultimate strength of beam-columns can be assessed using the Newmark integral method, where approximated equations for the moment- curvature relationships are employed to determine the corresponding curvatures to the applied loading conditions. The predictions obtained using the proposed procedure have been substantiated with available corrugated bulkhead test results.
