RECENT DEVELOPMENT OF DESIGN CRITERIA FOR HULL STRUCTURES OF BULK CARRIERS

Recent international attention given to bulk carrier losses has prompted a large number of investigations, discussion and initiatives throughout the shipping industry in an attempt to understand the factors behind these losses and to devise measures to prevent them in the future. At the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), a study has been undertaken to investigate responses of hull structures in bulk carriers, using representative design dynamic loads. From the study, structural weaknesses in existing bulk carrier designs and critical design loads have been identified. To prevent similar weaknesses in hull structures of future bulk carrier designs, ABS has developed a new strength standard for the design and assessment of hull structures of bulk carriers, based on a first principles approach. The proposed strength standard integrates initial minimum design requirement with overall strength assessment of the hull structure. Dynamic global loads and local pressures, and their combined effects, are considered in both strength and failure criteria. In this paper, an overview of this strength standard is presented. Problem structural areas unique to bulk carrier hull structures are identified and procedures to rectify these areas are discussed.
