THE EFFECTS OF GENERAL SPEED CALMING IN BUILT-UP AREAS. RESULTS OF A LARGE SCALE EXPERIMENT IN VAEXJOE. I MAIN REPORT

EFFEKTEN AV GENERELL HASTIGHETSDAEMPNING I TAETORT. RESULTAT AV ETT STORSKALIGT FOERSOEK I VAEXJOE. I HUVUDRAPPORT

Since 1986 the Department of Traffic Planning and Engineering at the Lund Institute of Technology has been running a total traffic safety research project in the city of Vaexjoe (ca 70 000 inhabitants). At an early stage speed was nominated as the central problem and the aim became to identify and implement speed reducing measures. Following this, 21 intersections were modified to mini roundabouts, 11 intersections were provided with "give way" regulation from all approach roads and the speed limit in the town centre was reduced to 30 km/h. Results presented concern: (1) impact on speed in all parts of the urban area; (2) impact on safety (accident rate, conflict studies, accident analysis, attitudes and behaviour); (3) drivers' selection of routes; (4) journey time and delay studies; (5) impact on exhaust emissions; and (6) impact on noise levels.
