BEAUTIFUL SMART BYWAYS - RECREATIONAL TRIP ENHANCEMENT FOR THE 90'S

This paper, while representing the views of the authors only, was inspired by work carried out under an FHWA study addressing the possible application of Intelligent Transportation Systems technologies to the Scenic Byways context. The Study proved to be very thought-provoking as the varied nature of the stake holder group was defined and as appropriate Intelligent Transportation Systems technologies were identified. The intention, in publishing this paper, is to share this experience with the Intelligent Transportation Systems community and to attempt to further the effort to harness Intelligent Transportation Systems technologies in contexts other than Metropolitan. Conclusions drawn in the paper confirm the value of a system architecture approach in accordance with the general philosophy of the National ITS Architecture, indicate the strong potential role for Intelligent Transportation Systems in the Scenic Byways context and identify areas of the subject where further work is required.
