INTEGRATED TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT IN HISTORIC TOWNS: THE CITY OF YORK
An account is given of the successful strategies adopted to maintain the historic character of the centre of York. The plan involved 4 key elements. Environmental improvements included pedestrianisation, space sharing, reducing the traffic capacity of streets, repaving and the appointment of a town centre manager. The promotion of environmentally sound modes of transport included the establishment of park-and-ride schemes, priority for buses and improved bus stop information, a wide range of cycling measures and improvements to walking conditions. The restraint of parking supply has meant 1 space per 2200 square m floor space. The management of traffic pressure has included the installation of an urban traffic signal control system.
