AMIS (ADVANCED MOBILE INFORMATION SYSTEMS) AND ITS NETWORK STRUCTURE PROPOSED

The Advanced Mobile Information Systems (AMIS) were introduced to the Kanagawa Traffic Control Center in April 1994. They utilize infrared vehicle detectors for two-way communications between an in-vehicle unit and central equipment. AMIS aim at realizing comprehensive traffic management policies by providing drivers with real-time traffic information, so they can avoid traffic problems in advance and secure safe and comfortable mobility in road networks. Therefore, the information provided must be precise. No differences in the information quality and little time lag, according to the offering area, should exist. Currently, the AMIS is operating in partial areas of Yokohama and Kawasaki, both involved in the Kanagawa police traffic control center area. The goal is to expand AMIS operation areas greatly, establishing an AMIS network that can overcome or narrow differences in data processed at each of the adjacent municipalities or prefectural systems. It is also necessary to develop similar data exchange systems in agencies to unify data format offered to motorists. An area-wide, high-speed, upgraded data network system is needed to ensure real-time features in the traffic-related information provided. This paper describes the considerations for expanding the Kanagawa AMIS--including traffic data exchange systems with other police or administration agencies--and proposes an AMIS network system concept for the future.
