FUTURE OF REAL WORLD ROADSIDE SAFETY DATA

Research goals related to roadside safety hardware include the following: Determine whether a new design can pass a "practical worst case" scenario; Determine which roadside features to treat; and Determine whether what has been designed using crash tests and simulation works in the real world. This paper examines the questions of whether we have adequate data to meet these goals, and if not, what can be done to produce better data. Crash data and related files are utilized to scope the overall roadside safety problem.
