SITE INVESTIGATION FOR LIME STABILISATION OF HIGHWAY WORKS

This Paper provides guidance on planning, conducting and directing site investigations for lime stabilisation in highway works. It considers the information required from the site investigation in order to design lime stabilised cappings and the best means of acquiring that information. Guidance is given on ground investigation strategy and laboratory testing. The main critical soil properties are discussed and their detection and evaluation described. Consideration is given to the chemical and geotechnical effects stabilisation may have on cohesive soil. Stabilisation may produce substantial benefits. These include the maximum use of on-site materials with less haulage off-site and reduced need for spoil tips, the saving of scarce resources and reduced impact of the construction on the surrounding environment. The information presented is suitable for preliminary, main and supplementary ground investigations and covers site investigation for the purposes of designing highway capping using lime stabilisation only. It does not cover lime modification of bulk earthworks. (A)
