QUALITY CONTROL OF THERMAL SPRAY COATINGS FOR EFFECTIVE LONG-TERM PERFORMANCE
The proper application of thermal spray coatings determine its effectiveness in terms of economic benefits. The corrosion protection provided by thermal spray coatings can last at least 25 years if proper surface preparation and spray techniques are employed. The application process is relatively slow, though, driving up the initial cost; however, the long application service life makes these coatings economically efficient. This article discusses application techniques, specifications, and quality control parameters (including surface finish, adhesion, and porosity of the finished coating), together with methods for measurement and suggested specification limitations.
