CONVERTING A GENERAL PURPOSE LANE TO AN HOV LANE: THE INTERSTATE 90 PROJECT
Converting a general purpose lane to an HOV lane can work. This is not a blanket statement aimed at any and all prospective corridors. Through traffic and environmental analyses should be performed to ensure any negative impacts are discovered. In addition, an extensive public information process must be conducted to solicit input and ensure a complete understanding of the project by the general public. As a result of the I-90 lane conversion project, the WSDOT is currently studying other freeway sections in the region that may be suited to adding an HOV lane through conversion of a general purpose lane.
