MODELLING OF SHIP IMPACT ON STOREBAELT WEST BRIDGE

The 6.6 km West Bridge in the Storebaelt Link in Denmark is constructed as a low level bridge. Accordingly, the vessels allowed to pass the bridge are limited by the heights in the spans. However, the sizes of the "legal" vessels has further been limited to 1,000 to 2,000 DWT to limit the design forces from ship collisions to a level corresponding to the design forces from waves/currents and ice loads. The paper describes the following: the accidental load case for bow ship collision; the dynamic non-linear modelling incl. non- linear soil; the consequences to the bridge in terms of plastic deformations in the piers; and the accelerations in the rail girder and the potential consequences to a passing train (derailing) (also nonlinear modelling).
