STERN LANDING VESSELS - ANSWER TO A PROBLEM?

The article describes a stern landing vessel designed in Australia, of which several examples are in successful service. Basically this is a reversed landing craft which beaches stern first and has a full width stern ramp to shore. A prime advantage over conventional landing craft is that a more seaworthy bow shape is thus possible, while the wheelhouse and accommodation can be shifted forward away from the machinery and also form a shelter for the open cargo deck. A shallow vee hull form with side pods houses the machinery and stern gear. The propellers and rudders are, therefore, tucked well up, about three-quarters of the water line from the bow, leaving a long run up to the transom and stern ramp and permitting operation to shelving beaches or concrete slipways. Profile drawings are given of a 650 tonnes deadweight stern landing vessel, fitted for 20 container ground slots and a proposed ferry with a displacement catamaran configuration.
