RESPONDING TO THE DEMAND FOR AN IMPROVEMENT IN SHIP STANDARDS

Through quality assurance accreditation and the continuing resolve of the International Maritime Organization and the support of its' member nations, the shipping industry is continually striving to achieve the highest standards. But it is not within the industry that the next step needs to be taken. Now is the time for the shippers to decide if they are prepared to pay higher freight rates for the quality of vessel that they are searching for. This article offers the view of a variety of individuals on this subject, each explaining where they feel current pressure to improve total ship standards is coming from and describing how they are reacting to this pressure. They also discuss in some detail what else they feel needs to be done and who should be doing it.
