LIGHTING THE WAY TO SAFETY

All passenger vessels must have low-location emergency lighting fitted by 1997, enabling passengers to readily identify all escape routes and exits, even in smoke. Under IMO Resolution A752 (18) the definition of low location lighting can be either: 1) an electrically powered (EP) system which can use incandescent bulbs, light-emitting diodes, electroluminescent strips or lamps, or electrofluorescent lamps, etc; or 2) photoluminescent (PL) material containing a chemical capable of storing energy when illuminated by visible light, It becomes visible when the ambient light source is less effective or absent. The material then gives off the stored energy for a period of time with diminishing luminance. The article looks at EP and PL systems which comply with IMO Requirements.
