COMBINING SAFETY AND EFFICIENCY IN RO-RO FERRIES

The article outlines the benefits of new solutions for more effective ro/ro ships, as applied to two ro/ro passenger/vehicle newbuildings. What is entirely new in their construction is the two ramps to the lower hold, which enable vehicles to drive straight out, without having to turn or reverse. The vessels are believed to be the first in the world with lower holds constructed for driving through. They will also have the longest existing lower hold in relation to the ship's length. If new regulations by Nordic countries and IMO are enforced which demand that water on the car deck is considered in stability calculations, then it will be easy in the future to divide the main deck. With doors, the side spaces on the main deck can be closed at the bow and stern, which prevents the water coming in on the car deck through an open bow or stern door and streaming to the sides. The free surface is confined to the centre of the ship and cannot put it in any real danger.
