ON A BRIDGEABLE DISTANCE? LIVING AND WORKING IN A POLYCENTRIC TOWN DISTRICT

OP OVERBRUGBARE AFSTAND? WONEN EN WERKEN IN EEN POLYCENTRISCH STADSGEWEST

In earlier times people lived where they were working. Walking or cycling determined the distance between home and work. During the 1960's the car made it possible to live and to work independently. Today, the objective of planning is to limit the mobility, but the suburbanization of living and working is still going on. In the centres of most cities there are almost no more industries and or big offices. This study, limited to the city of Amsterdam, studies the consequences which the re-arranging of the employment in a town district can have on living and working. There is a need for more data on commuting traffic. For poorly educated people with a low income living in old town districts there is hardly any work in the neighbourhood. It is not really possible for local authorities to re-arrange the employment in such town districts, but they can improve public transport to the place of work.
