METHOD FOR ESTIMATING THE STEEL AND THE LIGHT SHIP WEIGHT IN SHIP DESIGN

Weight calculation is of significant importance in ship design. The steel and the light ship weight do not only influence the design itself, but are often used to estimate the costs for design and production and are therefore critical for tendering a newbuilding project. A method for estimating the steel and the light ship weight of different types of merchant ships has been developed and implemented in a PC version under the operating system MS-DOS. The method is described. Experiences gained with this program in the project department of a German shipyard which builds ships up to 25,000 tons deadweight are discussed.
