GRI PIPELINE SIMULATION FACILITY PULL RIG. TOPICAL REPORT, 1989-1995

The Gas Research Institute's (GRI) Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) Program and Pipeline Simulation Facility has been established to advance the state of the art of gas pipeline inspection technology. It has four key elements: 1) an NDE laboratory; 2) a pull rig; 3) a flow loop; and 4) two test bed vehicles. The report describes the capabilities and attributes of the pull rig, which consists of four 300-foot long unpressured pipe runs. In-line inspection tools and test bed vehicles can be pulled through the pipe sections. Pull forces up to 56,000 pounds and speeds up to 25 mph can be achieved. A removable metal-loss defect set and a stress-corrosion cracking defect set have been installed in two of the unpressured pipe runs.
