THE PRELIMINARY DESIGN OF A FOILCAT

The paper explains the foilcat concept and an iterative model for the preliminary design of a foilcat is presented. The model is suitable for the evaluation of a large number of foilcats in a short time. The different components of the model are explained and problems and possibilities in the foilcat design at the respective stages are described. The first step when applying the model is to make a sketch of the main and bridge decks. Then the shape of the hulls is defined, followed by the choice of propulsive system and most important engine room equipment. Following that, the dimensions and positions of the foils are determined. Finally the weight, LCG and resistance are calculated. An example of how the model could be used is given.
