A COMBINED SIMPLIFIED AND PRECISE ANALYSIS OF RACKING DEFORMATION OF CAR CARRIERS

In the present paper a simplified racking analysis of a car carrier is proposed for the proper estimation of racking deformations at the transverse bulkhead sections at the initial stage of structural design. Introducing a simple beam model, which can be solved by a symbolic manipulation procedure, a closed form solution is obtained. In order to apply the analytical solution to racking deformations of actual ships, a correctional factor is introduced based on the precise three-dimensional structural analysis of ships having similar principal dimensions. The validity of the method is confirmed by comparing the predicted values with the precise numerical results obtained by three-dimensional analysis.
