INELASTIC INITIAL LOCAL BUCKLING OF PLATES WITH AND WITHOUT RESIDUAL STRESSES

A complex eigenvalue finite strip method of analysis that includes inelasticity is described. The method can handle shear effects easily, as well as the flow and deformation theories of plasticity. The method is used to study the initial local buckling of flat plates with and without residual stresses using both the flow and deformation theories. The local buckling of a web plate in an I - section subjected to shear is also considered. The method is then used to validate the limiting values of the width to thickness ratios given for flange plates in the limit states Australian steel structures code. A method for estimating the rotation capacity of a plastic hinge before the onset of local buckling is also given.
