ITALY'S COASTAL SEA-ROAD - STARTS MOVING IN JUNE WITH THE FIRST OF FIVE NEW RORO'S

The Italian transport system is strongly biased towards road haulage, and as the country is peninsular and mountainous it has serious traffic problems. The idea of rebalancing the transport system by transferring a substantial amount of cargo from road to sea and the advantages are discussed. A new company was formed in October 1990 to operate a cabotage service between the North and South of Italy. The company will operate a fleet of five specially built fast ro-ro vessels.
