DEVELOPMENT OF MID-DECK TANKER FOR THE PREVENTION OF OIL POLLUTION
The mid-deck tanker, developed to minimise accidental oil outflow from tankers has the following characteristics: double side structure protecting the cargo tanks on both sides and mid-height deck dividing the cargo space into upper and lower spaces. Based on the IMO comparative study on oil tanker design which showed that the oil outflow performance of mid-deck tankers is at least equivalent to that of double hull tankers, the mid-deck tanker was adopted as a new international tanker design standard. This paper discusses the basic concept, oil spill prevention ability, safety aspects and practicability of the mid-deck tanker.
