A METHOD OF IMPROVING THE PRECISION OF THE PREDICTION OF THE PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS OF A CPP - THE EFFECT OF BOSS BEING TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION

The boss of a CPP is significantly larger than that of a conventional propeller of similar size, to accommodate the pitch changing mechanism. This will not only influence the chordwise pressure distribution on the blade sections near the boss but will also affect the performance characteristics of a propeller in the open water. This paper presents a propeller lifting surface method with the inclusion of the effect due to the boss. A surface source distribution is used to replace the boss and the vortex lattice representation of propeller blades is also incorporated. Numerical results indicate that the blade pressure distributions in inner radii are significantly different from those without a boss. The precision of performance prediction characteristics of a propeller with a large boss can be upgraded by the inclusion of the effect of the boss.
