THE SHIPPING SCENE TOMORROW - NEEDS AND DEVELOPMENT

Expected developments within the different sea transportation segments are considered. This includes such factors as transported volume, ship sizes, ship types, etc., and the need for newbuildings, also in view of the present age profile and composition of the world fleet. The market's needs and their impact on ship design and operation are discussed together with the opportunities offered by technological developments. As to the latter, developments in materials, information technology, automation, etc., are all considered. In addition to developments in technology, the increased emphasis on the protection of the environment as well as on safety issues in general will have a great impact on both ship design and operation in the future. In this respect, new requirements are expected to be introduced on an international level (IMO), but probably also on a unilateral basis which will affect design at the ship, system and component levels. The effect of the reduced availability of qualified seafarers is also discussed. Developments in shipbuilding technology and methods will also affect ship design and construction in the future.
