OIL SKIMMERS VALDEZ STAR AND SHEARWATER

VALDEZ STAR and her sister ship SHEARWATER were designed and engineered by JBF Scientific Inc., U.S.A. and built by Goudy and Stevens Shipyard, U.S.A. The vessels were designed to operate in Prince William Sound where weather and sea conditions can be relatively severe. These conditions dictated the size of the steel vessels: beam, 31 feet; depth, 13 feet 6 inches; draft, 10 feet. The oil skimming vessels transport two small boats; store up to 2,000 ft. of containment boom; provide headquarters for directing oil spill operations; and provide long-range support. When not skimming, the ships with their tow winches and fore and aft cranes can be employed in placing containment booms around loading oil tankers, repairing docks, and taking bathymetric samples. Each ship can tow a 12,000-barrel oil barge.
