DEVELOPMENT OF ICE DRIFT MODELS FOR THE BARENTS SEA

In order to cover initial needs for ice drift modelling in the Barents Sea, Norwegian Hydrotechnical Laboratory (NHL) is implementing several models under the ESSO/SINTEF Arctic Research Program (ESARC). The different terms in a dynamic ice drift formula are discussed. A short description of the implemented ice drift models (both statistical and dynamic) is given as well as some case simulations. A characteristic feature feature of any flow in the Barents Sea is inertial oscillations as a result of the coincidence of the M2 tidal period and the inertial period. Accordingly a vectorial model is needed to allow inertial oscillations of the order of 1 - 10 km to be forecast.
