AN IMPROVEMENT ON THE 1978 ITTC PERFORMANCE PREDICTION METHOD AND THE ARBITRARY LOADING METHOD OF PROPULSION MODEL TEST

The flow conditions around ship models in propulsion tests at so-called "ship self-propulsion point" based on Froude's comparison law do not correspond to those around ships. So the routine methods for scaling w and t, in which only the effect of friction resistance can be considered are weak. A new method for estimating scale effects of w and t has been developed which can take both effects of friction resistance and propeller loading into account. Based on it, the 1978 ITTC performance prediction method can be improved and the propulsion model can be carried out at any one loading between loadings of ship's and model's self-propulsion point as long as their Froude's numbers are the same. The results indicate that the improved method is superior to the 1978 ITTC for some parameters and that the arbitrary loading method of propulsion test is practicable.
