A GENERALISED PROCEDURE FOR RANK OPTIMISATION APPLICATION TO SHIP DESIGN

The paper sets the principles of development and practical application of a computerised procedure for comparative evaluation of ship operation qualities aiming optimal selection of the hull form. The approach employed is based on the method of ranking developed at BSHC by means of which direct binding of ship geometry with ship behaviour in real service conditions is accomplished. The rank estimator is constructed on the basis of speed and safety considerations and a linear regression model for the generalised rank criterion is composed by multivariant investigation. Finally a search for optimal set of geometric parameters ensuring maximum possible rank value is effected by multiparameter nonlinear optimisation technique. The applicability of the newly-developed procedure is demonstrated on a 14,000t containership design and some practical results are given.
