U.S. NSF (NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION) POLAR RESEARCH PROGRAMS
Man's safe, comfortable and productive presence in the polar regions depends entirely on support with adequate technology. The technology in turn is derived from basic and applied engineering research with a focus on the special requirements of the polar regions. The final challenge is the marriage of the individual user requirements, say those of a research scientist, with the engineering effort to assure success of the particular project in an extreme and unforgiving environment. This paper describes selected technological and engineering problems associated with the activities of the U.S. Antarctic Program and U.S. Arctic research.
