A STUDY OF OPTIMAL SHIPPING PLANNING UNDER MULTI-CARRIER COMPETITION

There is excessive competition between seaborne container carriers on major container routes such as those between the Far East and North America. An effective shipping planning method is needed but few studies have been carried out. In this study, the authors suggest a model which takes into account the strategy of carriers in actual competition. The optimal service level and the scale of the fleet are determined by this model which consists of two sub-models; a shipper's behaviour sub-model and a carrier's facility sub-model. Some case studies show the effectiveness of the model.
