ON THE ENVIRONMENTAL OPERABILITY OF SEA-GOING SYSTEMS
The purpose of this note is to formulate a concept for evaluating the environmental operability of ships and other sea-going systems in a manner that is meaningful to the designer. The scope of the discussion covers all deployable sea-going systems of the single-hull surface displacement type. Although the ideas presented are intended to be general, catamarans, trimarans, hydrofoil craft, air-cushioned craft and submarines are not considered since they present somewhat special problems not immediately resolvable. Under surface ships, both merchantmen and men-of-war will be discussed. But omitted from consideration are ice-breakers and other vessels intended for operation in ice.
