PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES IN SHIPBUILDING TODAY AND TOMORROW

The paper briefly reviews the application of new production technology in modern shipyards. Five types of yard are considered: 1) Specialists for single sophisticated ships; 2) Bulk shipyards for simple ships; 3) Low overhead shipyards for small ships; 4) Naval shipyards; and 5) Ship factory for one ship type in series. The present status of the design, planning and manufacturing phases of shipbuilding is outlined and some suggestions are made for the future direction of the industry.
