CCTV CAMERA SITE SELECTION: A FIELD EXPERIENCE
Closed circuit television (CCTV) is an essential element of visual surveillance for intelligent transportation systems (ITS). CCTV consists of various elements including the camera unit, a controller cabinet housing the control equipment, and the communication system that connects the camera to a control center. Once a CCTV camera is mounted in the field, it is expensive to relocate. Therefore, thorough consideration needs to be given in the design to ensure proper siting and mounting. This paper addresses these issues (based on design experience in locating over 100 cameras on freeways and highways in California), suggests guidelines for camera site selection on high-speed freeways and city arterials, and discusses processes for preliminary and final camera site selection. The paper also examines the innovative design and operation of a CCTV video van used in video surveys as an alternative to bucket truck surveys.
